Pain responds exceptionally well to acupuncture. NICE — the body that sets clinical guidelines for the NHS — recommends acupuncture for chronic primary pain, tension headaches and the prevention of migraines.

A different approach to pain

Conventional pain management often centres on medication — anti-inflammatories, analgesics, muscle relaxants. These can provide short-term relief but rarely address the reason the pain exists in the first place. TCM acupuncture takes a different view: pain arises when the flow of Qi and blood through the body is obstructed or deficient. Treatment aims to remove that obstruction, restore normal circulation and rebuild the underlying resilience of the affected area.

This approach produces results that often surprise patients who have been told their pain is permanent or untreatable. Dr (TCM) D'Alberto has over 25 years of experience helping patients in Berkshire overcome pain that had not responded to conventional treatment.

Back pain

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek acupuncture — and one of the conditions with the strongest evidence base. NICE guidelines recommend acupuncture as a front-line treatment for chronic primary low back pain. Research consistently demonstrates clinically meaningful improvements in both pain levels and function following a course of acupuncture, with effects that outlast the treatment period itself.

At Acupuncture Crowthorne we treat the full spectrum of back conditions — acute strains, chronic lower back pain, lumbar disc problems, sciatica, sacroiliac joint dysfunction and spinal stenosis. Each treatment plan is built around the TCM pattern identified for the individual patient.

Neck pain and shoulder tension

Persistent neck pain and shoulder tightness — often arising from desk work, driving or postural habits — are among the most common presentations in our clinic. Acupuncture relaxes hypertonic muscles, reduces local inflammation and improves the range of motion that restricted tissue has inhibited. Many patients notice significant improvement in mobility within the first two or three sessions.

Knee pain and joint problems

Acupuncture is recommended by NICE for the management of osteoarthritis of the knee. A landmark meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that acupuncture produced clinically significant improvements in knee pain and function — outperforming both sham acupuncture and conventional care alone. Dr D'Alberto regularly treats knee osteoarthritis, meniscal problems, patellofemoral syndrome and post-injury rehabilitation.

Headaches and migraines

For people experiencing frequent tension headaches or migraines, acupuncture offers one of the most effective preventative options available. NICE recommends a course of up to ten sessions for chronic tension-type headache and migraine prevention — comparable in effectiveness to prophylactic drug therapy, without the side effects or dependency concerns. Many patients achieve a sustained reduction in both frequency and severity that continues well beyond the end of treatment.

Sciatica

Sciatic pain — radiating from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg — can be debilitating and slow to resolve with conventional treatment alone. Acupuncture addresses both the local nerve irritation and the underlying spinal and muscular factors that contribute to the condition. Clinical research supports its use for both acute and chronic sciatica, often producing faster and more complete resolution than physiotherapy or medication alone.

Other pain conditions treated

Fibromyalgia

Widespread chronic pain with fatigue, cognitive difficulties and sleep disturbance. TCM treatment addresses the systemic constitutional patterns at the root of fibromyalgia.

Arthritis

Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis benefit from regular acupuncture — reducing pain, improving joint mobility and moderating the inflammatory response.

Sports injuries

Muscle tears, tendinopathies, repetitive strain and post-surgical rehabilitation. Acupuncture accelerates tissue repair and restores functional movement.

Neuropathic pain

Nerve pain, including peripheral neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia and complex regional pain syndrome, often responds when other treatments have not.
